How this calculator works

HRA exemption is the lowest of three amounts: the actual HRA you receive, rent paid minus 10% of your salary, and 50% of salary for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai (40% for other cities). Here salary means basic salary plus dearness allowance, where it forms part of retirement benefits.

The exemption is available only under the old tax regime. You also need rent receipts, and the landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh.

If you own the house you live in, or do not actually pay rent, no exemption is available however much HRA appears in your salary structure.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often.

Still have a question?

A chartered accountant will look at your case and reply within one business day.

Ask a CA
Can I claim HRA under the new regime?

No. The HRA exemption is one of the deductions the new regime does not allow. If you have substantial HRA, compare the two regimes before choosing.

What counts as a metro city for this?

Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai attract the 50% limit. Every other city, including Noida, Gurugram and Bengaluru, takes the 40% limit.
