How this calculator works

Net worth is what you own less what you owe. The arithmetic is simple; the work is in the values. Property at the price you paid years ago and property at today's value give very different answers, so the basis of valuation matters more than the subtraction.

A net worth certificate is often asked for by an embassy for a visa, by a department for a tender, by a lender with a loan application, or under a scheme that has a net worth condition. Those certificates are issued by a chartered accountant on a prescribed basis and have to be supported by documents: title deeds, bank statements, valuation reports and loan statements.

A certificate is not the same as this calculation. The certifying accountant has to see evidence for each asset and liability, and may value an asset differently from the figure an owner would use.

Ask a CA
Can a chartered accountant certify my net worth from this?

No. A certificate has to be supported by documents for each asset and liability, and the accountant takes responsibility for the basis of valuation. This calculator is for working out the figure yourself before that process starts.

At what value should I take my property?

That depends on why the certificate is needed. Some purposes require cost, others market value supported by a valuation report. Establish the required basis before gathering the figures, or the work has to be redone.

Do I include my business?

Where you hold shares in a company, the shares are the asset and are valued as such. For a proprietorship, the business assets and liabilities are yours directly and come into the computation individually.
